Soil is living and breathing. Think of soil structure like the foundation of a house; to grow plants to their full potential, you should have a sound foundation to start. Soil structure is composed of several main components, those being sand, silt and clay. When one or more of those components makes up too large part of the soil, it's like a poorly constructed foundation and creates lasting problems from the start.
Plants, animals and microorganisms are all instruments in an orchestra; each plays a crucial part in the natural symphony of life. If even one of the players is out of tune, the whole soil food web suffers.
However, when everything is in order, the results are beautiful.
Microbes function like Nature's invisible factories, breaking down organic matter and recycling elements like hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron and micronutrients, which are essential to all plants and animals. For example, nitrogen fixing bacteria change nitrogen gas in the soil and atmosphere into ammonia, making nitrogen available to plants!
Beneficial soil bacteria and fungi allow nature to continue its endless cycle of life and renewal of what is known as "sustainable soils".
Biotic Soil Amendments, BSA’s, have become a cost effective way to successfully re-vegetate sites with poor soils. Many times, soils are left with little to no organic matter, microbial activity and nutrients after construction which presents challenges for establishing a sustainable cycle for vegetation establishment. BSA’s materials provide much needed organic matter, microbial activity and nutrients that can be applied hydraulically in a cost effective application. BSA’s offer a cost effective way to jumpstart the soil building process at the time of seeding to ensure the site will be stable long term.
